Perfecting the Imperfect: Design Considerations for Detailing Unique Existing Building Enclosure Conditions

Presenter: Ben Johnson, CxA+BE – Building Envelope Consultant (Walker Consultants)

A/E/C professionals often encounter unique existing conditions where building enclosure systems intersect or lack continuity, including parapets, planters, exterior walls, and canopies. Poorly detailed conditions can lead to interior damage, occupant discomfort, and costly repairs. This presentation will explore strategies for visualizing and detailing these complex conditions in three dimensions, while emphasizing collaboration between designers and contractors to develop practical solutions that maintain enclosure continuity.

Performance Mock-Ups: Incorporating Off-Site Lessons Learned into Project Construction

Presenter: Gaby S. Simundson, Project Consultant II (Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. – SGH)

Performance Mock-Ups (PMUs) provide project teams with an opportunity to evaluate complex design conditions before full-scale construction. This presentation will cover key considerations throughout the PMU lifecycle, from design and construction through testing and field validation. It will also highlight lessons learned from complex PMUs, including strategies for improving coordination, confirming enclosure performance, and avoiding common pitfalls.

Shield & Structure: Fortifying Exterior Wall Cladding Support Design

Presenter: Travis Cacciatori, CDT, LEED AP, Director of Sales, Engineering & Marketing (Knight Wall Systems)

This course explores advancements in rainscreen exterior wall systems under the 2024 International Building Code (IBC). Topics include cladding support systems, thermal derating, rail orientation, and single- versus double-layer configurations. Attendees will examine how these design choices affect structural performance, durability, efficiency, and code compliance.

Building Enclosure Repair/Restoration Construction: Leveraging Collaborative Partnerships Between Construction and Design Professionals

Presenters: Jeff Diguette, P.E., Vice President, Principal Engineer (Tekton Building Solutions Group) & Chris Dowling, P.E. Enclosure Executive (Tekton Building Solutions Group)

This course provides a construction professional’s perspective on building enclosure repair and restoration projects, including waterproofing, weather barriers, masonry, sealants, and concrete work. Through real-world examples, presenters will explore the value of collaboration, root-cause problem solving, constructability, sequencing, and communication among design and construction professionals to achieve successful project outcomes.
