The IIBEC Mid-Atlantic Chapter educational seminar scheduled for Tuesday, July 13, 2021 is quickly approaching. As always it should prove to be a stimulating and informative gathering. 1. Examining ANSI/SPRI ES-1 Test Standard for Edge Systems Used with Low Slope Roofing Systems
Presenter: Ed MacIntosh – Metal-Era LLC
Abstract: Section 1504.5 of the International Building Code (IBC) requires that for low-slope built-up, modified bitumen, or single-ply roof systems, metal edge securement shall be designed and installed to resist project wind loads and shall be tested in accordance with ANSI/SPRI ES-1 Test Standard for Edge Systems Used with Low Slope Roofing Systems. This course will provide background on the origin and applicability of the ES-1 standard and its inclusion in the building code, information on how the tests are implemented, interrelationships with building insurance requirements, and tools/solutions available to the building enclosure consultant to achieve ES-1 compliance on their projects.
About the Presenter: Ed MacIntosh is a regional business development manager for Metal-Era LLC, a provider of engineered metal roof products such as coping, fascia, gutter, expansion joint, ventilation, and edge metal systems. Previously, Mr. MacIntosh has held positions in the building enclosure materials and construction systems industries. Mr. MacIntosh is a veteran of the US ARMY, Captain, and holds an MBA in Business from Penn State and a BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University.
2. Stormwater Management Solutions on Low-Slope Roofs – What the Building Enclosure Consultant Should Know
Presenter: Richard C. Hayden – American Hydrotech, Inc.
Abstract: Stormwater management, including retention, detention, or both, are increasingly becoming (or required to be, in certain jurisdictions) key green infrastructure elements on rooftops as they absorb, reduce, and delay stormwater from reaching sewers or other grey infrastructure systems. In the context of vegetative roofs in a Protected Membrane Roofs (PMR) configuration, a variety of products and systems in the roofing overburden can be configured to address project-specific stormwater performance needs. The selection of these products and systems, however, in addition to requiring evaluation against project needs, must be coordinated with other aspects of the building design (e.g., structural, plumbing), to result in an assembly that can be implemented and perform as intended. This course will provide a holistic overview of stormwater retention/detention capabilities and design of PMR systems.
About the Presenter: Richard C. Hayden RLA ASLA CLARB A.M. ASCE GRP is the Garden Roof and Blue Roof Department Manager for American Hydrotech. Mr. Hayden brings 40 years of private and public sector design experience to American Hydrotech’s Garden Roof Department. In this position since 2010, Mr. Hayden’s responsibilities have included development and enhancements of rooftop assemblies as well as writing and speaking extensively on topics related to deploying rooftop stormwater management solutions. He was a lead author in creating the 3rd and 4th Editions of the Hydrotech Garden Roof Planning Guide.
3. Implementing and Restoring Traditional Roofing Systems – Practical Lessons from the Field
Presenter: Dean Jagusch – Wagner Roofing Company
Abstract: Projects that construct or restore traditional roofing systems such as architectural sheet metal, slate, and clay tile, often on complex historic structures, can present some of the most challenging and rewarding experiences available to consultants in the building enclosure industry. Many consultants responsible for the design and specification of such systems possess the training and experience to do so effectively, but the consultant skill set can be enriched by information shared from experienced practitioners in the traditional roofing field. This course will highlight a variety of practical lessons-learned related to the implementation of traditional roofing systems by Mr. Dean Jagusch, Owner/President of an award-winning roofing/restoration contractor in the greater Washington, DC region.
About the Presenter: Established in 1914, Wagner Roofing Company employs more than 75 dedicated team members aimed at providing some of the nation’s most recognized roofing craftsmanship. In 2015, Dean Jagusch purchased the company from 3rd Generation family member, Chuck Wagner, with the goal to continue to build the Wagner legacy and heritage that the company and its craftsmen are known for. Previously, Mr. Jagusch held leadership positions in the commercial roofing industry, and he holds degrees from Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland, New Zealand, and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
4. Fenestration Field Testing Fundamentals
Presenters: Arun Ramlakhan and Anthony Nicastro – Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. (SGH)
Abstract: Fenestration products come in a wide variety of forms – ranging from window units manufactured in a production facility to custom stick-built curtain wall systems that are assembled in the field – and verifying that fenestrations perform as intended is an important part of building enclosure performance success. The Architecture/Engineering/Construction (AEC) industry relies on the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) for fenestration guidelines regarding product ratings for anticipated performance, installation and integration with adjacent assemblies, and field-testing methods and procedures. This course highlights key elements of AAMA standards related to field performance testing of various fenestration systems on new construction projects.
About the Presenters: Arun Ramlakhan is a Project Consultant within SGH’s Building Technology Group in the Washington, DC area office. Arun’s work includes new design building enclosure consulting, construction administration, rehabilitation design, and field investigation of existing building enclosures for owners, architects, and general contractors. Anthony Nicastro is an SGH Associate Principal with national experience in the investigation, design, and construction administration of building enclosure components for major institutional, commercial, educational, and residential buildings. He has consulted with architects, building owners, and contractors to analyze facade design concepts, evaluate construction defects, and develop repairs for complex enclosure issues.
