The IIBEC Mid-Atlantic Chapter educational seminar scheduled for Tuesday December 1, 2020 is quickly approaching. As always it should prove to be a stimulating and informative gathering. After careful consideration of the impact of the global COVID-19 outbreak and our priority for the health and welfare of our members, this seminar will be held in a virtual setting. 1.      Natural Stone Composite Panel Applications and Performance Capabilities

Presenter: Julie White – LiteCore

Abstract: Natural stone composite panels combine the unique aesthetic of natural stone with the performance capabilities and constructability benefits of a panelized enclosure cladding system. Stone composite panels are lightweight, efficient to install, and highly customizable. In addition to highlighting the performance capabilities of stone composite panels, this course will discuss important design considerations, including panel selection criteria, testing requirements, installation methods, and applications.

About the Presenter: Julie White is the Business Development Leader for LiteCore, a natural stone composite panel cladding product (stone veneer adhered to an aluminum honeycomb backing and fiberglass mesh) supplied by the Indiana Limestone Company. LiteCore panels are available in a variety of natural stones including limestone, granite, or marble. Julie has over 15 years of experience related to product knowledge and design of building exteriors. Julie focuses on aligning innovative products with architects, owners, and builders for their exterior enclosure projects.

2. Blindside Below-Grade Waterproofing System Selection and Design Considerations

Presenter: Pete DiGiovanni – Carlisle Coatings & Waterproofing (CCW)

Abstract: The waterproofing industry offers a wide array of blindside waterproofing options, each with benefits and potential pitfalls. This course will touch on the history of blindside waterproofing technology and introduce common blindside waterproofing systems in the commercial market, describe application methods and the associated features and limitations, and assist designers and specifiers in selection of the appropriate blindside waterproofing system to meet project-specific demands.

About the Presenter: Pete DiGiovanni is employed by Carlisle Coatings & Waterproofing and serves as the company’s Waterproofing Product Manager. Pete has worked in Research & Development, Technical Services, Warranty Services and Marketing for waterproofing systems for over 25 years for two of the largest specialty building material manufacturers in the world.

3. “Free-Forming” The Building Enclosure With Standing Seam Metal Panels

Presenter: Tony Thompson – Bemo USA Corporation

Abstract: This course will provide an overview of the sophisticated manufacturing techniques available for high performance standing seam metal roof and wall panel systems, including both field-formed and factory-fabricated panels. This course will also include design considerations for specifying and detailing complex roof to façade transitions, three-dimensional modeling for convex-concave curved building shapes, dome and cylindrical building surfaces, and custom sub-structure considerations to accommodate segmented surfaces.

About the Presenter: Tony Thompson has over 30 years of experience assisting design professionals with the technical aspects of building enclosure systems, specializing in a variety of metal roof and metal wall panel systems.  With a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Drexel University, he has held positions in sales and engineering management and has extensive experience with design standards, ASTM/UL testing, and the proper detailing and installation techniques.

4. Advanced Curtain Wall Facades: High Performance Custom Design

Presenter: John Jackson, AIA and CJ Brandmeier, PE – Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Inc. (SGH)

Abstract: Facade design and construction has evolved from empirically-based, load-bearing, mass masonry facades, to contemporary, computationally-based, non-load bearing curtain walls with a variety of geometric and material configurations. Regardless of the time or technology, facades’ role in regulating the outside and inside environments remains the same. Facades perform, through multiple layers all with specific functions, much like the human skin or clothing. Just as clothing can create a fashion statement, facades too play a vital role in communicating a building’s visual and aesthetic intention. In this course, we will explore these topics, present the basic parameters of facade design, discuss integration and tie-ins with other building enclosure systems, explore contemporary examples and the specialized tools used by facade engineers, and look ahead to what the future may hold for the fabric of the building skin.

About the Presenters: John A. Jackson is a Senior Project Manager with SGH’s Building Technology group. John graduated from Penn State University with degrees in both architecture and structural engineering and has more than 16 years of experience in building enclosure design. He applies his creative and technical skills to the design and engineering of innovative enclosure systems, having worked on a wide variety of projects both domestically and abroad, with particular expertise in curtain walls, custom glazing systems, structural glass, and glass investigations. CJ Brandmeier of SGH has more than five years of experience in providing structural engineering and building enclosure consulting services for a range of domestic and international projects. CJ’s focus is design and investigation of glazed curtain wall systems.
