1. Tapered Insulation Roof Systems: What Are They? How Do I Specify Them and Why?

 About the Presentation: The goal of tapered roof insulation systems is to reduce or eliminate the amount of ponding/standing water on the finished membrane when the roof deck does not provide adequate slope. Draining the water in a timely and efficient manner minimizes the adverse effects that ponding/standing water can have on completed roof membranes. A properly designed tapered roof insulation system, not only provides the positive drainage needed but also helps extend the life of the roof membrane and provides thermal value as well thus reducing the heating and cooling expenses of the building owner.

Learning Objectives:
– Identify and understand key terms when designing a tapered system.
– Identify specific parameters to include in your tapered system.
– Identify building design requirements and which type of tapered insulation is appropriate.
– Understand what a cricket is and when to use it.

 About the Presenter: Paul Bilinski is a Tapered Designer/Estimator for Hunter Panels. Bilinski has been in the commercial roofing industry for over 15 years providing tapered design services and solutions to architects, specifiers, and contractors. Bilinski designs and estimates tapered projects for Hunter Panels as well as every OEM Roofing Manufacturer in the United States. Bilinski is based out of Ithaca, NY, the Finger Lakes Region and the number one rated wine region in the US, where he and his wife raise their two children.

2. Connecting the Building Enclosure – Best Practices for Designing and Constructing Transitions Between Primary Building Enclosure Systems

Presenters: Charles Ho – Consulting Engineer at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc.

 About the Presentation: This presentation will review common issues with detailing transitions between the primary building enclosure systems on a building, including below-grade waterproofing, exterior wall weather barrier, glazing systems, and roofing. It will also include an overview of the core principles behind building enclosure transitions and explore design decisions that drive material selection and detailing. By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify and address complex building enclosure transitions.

Learning Objectives:
– Identify the transitions between primary enclosure systems on a building that often lead to performance issues such as air and water leakage.
– Understand fundamental concepts and principles behind designing transitions between primary enclosure systems.
– Learn how to use pre-construction processes to mitigate the risks of in-field construction issues.
– Learn about innovative design solutions for building enclosure transitions through real-world examples and case studies.

About the Presenters: Charles Ho is a member of the Building Technology group at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger in the Washington, DC office who has contributed to a variety of projects for commercial, institutional, and multi-family buildings in the Greater Washington Area. His professional building enclosure experience includes assignments ranging from design consulting, rehabilitation design, and investigation projects for owners, architects, and contractors.

3. Lightning Protection 101

Presenters: Stephen Humeniuk, President – Warren Lightning Rod Company

 About the Presentation: This presentation will provide a review of proper lightning protection system design and application as conforms with UL and NFPA lightning protection requirements. Participants will gain a general understanding of how lightning protection systems work, including the five essential elements of effective lightning protection systems and the considerations required to specify effective, attractive, and low-maintenance lightning protection systems.

– Understand the risks lightning poses to unprotected buildings.
– Identify the five essential elements to a proper lightning protection system.
– Describe non-conventional methods of lightning protection.
– Provide considerations for lightning protection design.

About the Presenters: Steve is the President of Warren Lightning Rod Company and brings the company’s deeply rooted value system to every aspect of his role. Steve leads a team of likeminded, tenured professionals that includes one of the nation’s largest groups of LPI Certified Master Installers.

4. Cold Storage Roof Design

Presenters: Samir Ibrahim, F- IIBEC, CSI, F-SRWA, EIA, Managing Director – JSI global Building Envelope Consulting

About the Presentation: This presentation covers the various principles and standards that govern refrigerated facilities and their roof design. Factors influencing the selection of roofing assemblies and materials will be discussed in depth along with critical vapor seal details. Tips to consider when performing an inspection or when conducting a field investigation will also be covered.

Learning Objectives:
– Review practices, principles and standards governing Cold Storage design & operation.
– Identify influences for selection of a roof assembly.
– Understand The Vapor Seal and critical roof details.
– Identify steps to reduce temperature (Drawdown) to avoid damage to the envelope.
– Identify and remediate problems.
– Understand key considerations for inspecting and investigating.

About the Presenters: Samir Ibrahim is a former employee of Carlisle who recently retired after forty-two years of service. During his career with the company, he was primarily focused on serving the design community and supporting the CCM global marketing efforts in roofing and other design-driven niche markets. After his retirement, Samir established “JSI global”, a design and forensic firm that focuses on the entire building envelope. As the Managing Director, he oversees and guides all design and field activities, negotiates work with clients and assists with the development of asset management and various restoration strategies.
